MLB Trade Deadline Rap Up

The Indians acquired first baseman/left fielder Lars Anderson from the Red Sox for Double-A starter Steven Wright, tweets WEEI’s Alex Speier.

The Reds added a late-inning reliever to the NL’s best bullpen today, acquiring Jonathan Broxton from the Royals, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).  The Reds sent Triple-A lefty Donnie Joseph and Double-A righty J.C. Sulbaran to the Royals in return, tweets Rosenthal’s colleague Jon Paul Morosi.

The Rangers acquired Ryan Dempster from the Cubs, tweets ESPN’s Buster Olney. Third baseman Christian Villanueva and right-hander Kyle Hendricks will go to the Cubs in the trade, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News tweets.

The Yankees acquired corner infielder Casey McGehee from the Pirates for reliever Chad Qualls, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The Pirates acquired first baseman Gaby Sanchez from the Marlins for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and a competitive balance pick, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

The Red Sox will acquire left-handed reliever Craig Breslow from the Diamondbacks, Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com reports (Twitter links). The Red Sox will send Matt Albers andScott Podsednik to Arizona to complete the trade. 

The Cardinals acquired reliever Edward Mujica from the Marlins for third baseman Zack Cox, tweets Peter Gammons of MLB Network.

The Giants have to have bolstered their lineup with an All-Star caliber outfielder for the second consecutive summer.  They acquired right fielder Hunter Pence from the Phillies for right fielder Nate Schierholtz, minor league reliever Seth Rosin and, minor league catcher/first baseman Tommy Joseph the Phillies announced.

Shane Victorino is returning to the organization that drafted him in 1999.  The Dodgers acquired Victorino from the Phillies today for starting pitching prospect Ethan Martin and reliever Josh Lindblom, according to Yahoo’s Tim Brown (Twitter link).  The deal has been officially announced by both teams, and the Phillies also received a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The Mariners have traded Brandon League to the Dodgers for prospects Leon Landry andLogan Bawcom, the team announced. Earlier today we heard that a number of contendershad interest in Seattle’s former closer as they looked to bolster their bullpens.

The Mariners have acquired outfielder Eric Thames from the Blue Jays for reliever Steve Delabar, the team announced.

The Blue Jays and Pirates have agreed to swap outfielder Travis Snider for right-hander Brad Lincoln, the teams announced.

The Cubs have traded left-hander Paul Maholm, outfielder Reed Johnson and cash considerations to the Braves in a four-player trade that provides Atlanta with reinforcements for the season’s final two months and bolsters Chicago’s minor league system. The Cubs obtain right-handers Jaye Chapman and Arodys Vizcaino in the trade, which the teams have announced. 

The Rangers officially acquired a former Rookie of the Year today, getting catcher Geovany Soto and cash from the Cubs for minor league pitcher Jake Brigham and a player to be named later or cash.

The White Sox announced that they have acquired Francisco Liriano from the Twins for infielder Eduardo Escobar and left-hander Pedro Hernandez.

The Giants have acquired infielder Marco Scutaro and cash considerations from the Rockies in exchange for minor league second baseman Charlie Culberson.  The money will help pay a portion of the approximately $2.2MM that Scutaro is owed for the rest of the season. 

The Angels have acquiredZack Greinke in a trade with the Brewers.  Milwaukee will receive top infield prospect Jean Segura and Double-A right-handers Ariel Pena and John Hellweg in exchange for their ace.

The Dodgers announced that they have acquired Hanley Ramirez and Randy Choate from the Marlins for Nathan Eovaldi and minor league right-hander Scott McGough. Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that Miami is not sending any money to the Dodgers to cover the salaries of Ramirez and Choate (Twitter links). But GM Ned Colletti couldn’t pass up the chance to add Ramirez to his team’s struggling lineup.

The Pirates have acquired left-handed starter Wandy Rodriguez from the Astros in exchange for minor leaguers Rudy OwensRobbie Grossman, and Colton Cain. The Astros will also pay some of the remaining salary owed to Rodriguez at least through 2013 and perhaps through 2014, as the club option for that year became a player option when Rodriguez was traded, per a stipulation in his contract. The Astros’ yearly contributions to Rodriguez’s salaries break down as such: $1.7MM in 2012, $8.5MM in 2013, and potentially $7.5MM in 2014.

The Tigers have addressed their two most pressing needs with one trade, acquiring Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez from the Marlins in a deal that will send top pitching prospect Jacob Turner to Miami. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports first reported the trade, which suggests the Marlins are willing to look to 2013 and beyond following a disappointing 44-51 start to the season (on Twitter). The Marlins obtain prospects Rob Brantlyand Brian Flynn along with Turner, Gammons tweets.

A legendary figure in Seattle will be changing uniforms, but won’t have to go farther than the visitors’ clubhouse to join his new team. The Yankees, who are playing in Seattle tonight, have acquired Ichiro Suzuki and cash from the Mariners in exchange right-handers D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar, the teams have confirmed.

Within the press release, Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln revealed that Ichiro requested the trade:

“Several weeks ago, Ichiro Suzuki, through his long time agent, Tony Attanasio, approached Chuck Armstrong and me to ask that the Mariners consider trading him. Ichiro knows that the club is building for the future, and he felt that what was best for the team was to be traded to another club and give our younger players an opportunity to develop.”

The 38-year-old Ichiro has never known life outside of Seattle in the Major Leagues, but will jump from a last place team to a first place team as a result of the transaction.

he White Sox have acquired Kevin Youkilis and cash from the Red Sox in exchange for pitcher Zach Stewart and utility player Brent Lillibridge, both teams announced. Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com tweets the cash being exchanged is slightly more than $5.5MM.

Chase Headly: Will wait until winter.

Denard Span: Reds tried to get him.

Alfonso Soriano: Too much money left on contract.

Joe Blanton: Deal fell through with Baltimore.

Cliff Lee: Rangers, Diamondbacks had interest.

Carlos Lee: Will be put on waivers by Marlins.

Winers and Losers of Deadline Trades.

Winners:

Dodgers: The new ownership went out and got Shane Victorino to add on with Hanley Rameriez. 

Giants: Added Hunter Pence to counter Dodgers moves.

Rangers: Added Dempster after no other small asking price starters.

Pirates: Added players to a team that could make postseason for first time in 19 years.

Astros: Added plenty of prospects, actually 19 of them, to add to the future of the franchise.

Losers:

Marlins: After disappointing season had another fire sale.

Red Sox: Didn’t add much.

Oakland: A magical season, but didn’t take opportunity to add.

Cubs: Garza did not get traded, and they got little back for Dempster. Did not get rid of Soriano’s contract.
